Gyeongbuk Office of Education Holds Briefing Session on Additional Designation of Future Education District Project
On the 2nd, a project briefing session for the additional designation of the 2023 Gyeongbuk Future Education District was held at Hwangryongwon in Gyeongju.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gui-yeol] The Gyeongbuk Office of Education held a ‘2023 Gyeongbuk Future Education District Additional Designation Project Briefing Session’ for basic local governments on the 2nd at Hwangryongwon in Gyeongju.
The briefing session was attended by more than 70 people, including officials from eight basic local governments?Pohang, Mungyeong, Yeongdeok, Chilgok, Uljin, Cheongsong, Yeongcheon, and Goryeong?as well as education office personnel.
The Gyeongbuk Future Education District refers to areas designated by an agreement between the Gyeongbuk Office of Education and basic local governments to build a regional education community through active communication and cooperation between schools and local communities, aiming to realize warm Gyeongbuk education.
The Gyeongbuk Future Education District project, in which the education office, local governments, and village residents cooperate to build an educational community, is currently operating in five locations (Uiseong, Sangju, Yecheon, Andong, and Gyeongju), and plans to expand by adding five more districts through a basic local government contest in 2023.
At the briefing session, presentations were given on the operational achievements of the Sangju Future Education District over the past three years and on the creation of a regional education ecosystem and village education community operation cases by the Uiseong Future Education District Center, an intermediary organization between the Uiseong Office of Education and Uiseong County Office.
During the briefing, local government officials and regional education support office personnel interested in the additional designation and operation of the Gyeongbuk Future Education District gathered around one table to lay the foundation for ‘building an educational governance of the regional education ecosystem through cooperation between the education office and local governments.’ Current Future Education District managers also participated to exchange experiences and operational know-how.
The main policies of the Gyeongbuk Future Education District, promoted since 2020, include four linked tasks: ▲establishing a stable Gyeongbuk education governance based on communication and cooperation ▲operating a region-linked curriculum connected with local communities as places of learning and life ▲supporting local-linked care and after-school activities through village school communities ▲conducting regionally distinctive program activities for public education innovation linked with schools and local communities.
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education will accept applications from local governments for additional Future Education District designations until the end of August 2023, select the final candidates by the end of September through evaluation, and sign MOUs between the provincial education office and local governments in January next year to officially start the project.
The project cost will be shared equally by the education office and basic local governments at 200 million KRW per year each, and after the four-year project period ends, extension will be discussed through consultation between the two institutions.
Superintendent Lim Jong-sik said, “In the serious situation of declining school-age population, increasing interest in care and education for children together with villages and building village education communities through the Future Education District project will breathe new life into local communities facing the crisis of local extinction.”
