Changwon Special City Holds Joint Meeting with Related Agencies on Nakdong River Algae Outbreak

No Safety Issues with Tap Water Supply at Changwon Chilseo Water Purification Plant Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held a joint meeting with related organizations and the private sector at Chilseo Water Purification Plant regarding the occurrence of algae in the Nakdong River.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] On the 28th, Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held a joint meeting with related organizations and civilians regarding the occurrence of algae in the Nakdong River at Chilseo Water Purification Plant. Attendees included officials from Gyeongnam Province, Changwon City, Haman County, Changnyeong County, experts, and residents near the Nakdong River. They reviewed the algae occurrence situation and conducted an on-site inspection of the water purification plant.


The participants had in-depth discussions on ▲the current status and outlook of algae occurrence in the lower Nakdong River ▲algae countermeasures by each organization ▲water quality improvement plans for the Nakdong River through expert consultation ▲difficulties and suggestions from residents near the Nakdong River.


At the same time, they conducted a joint civilian inspection of the Chilseo Water Purification Plant’s response measures to the algae occurrence while touring the site.


To minimize the inflow of algae generated in the raw water of the Nakdong River, Chilseo Water Purification Plant operates two algae blocking screens and two surface disturbance devices at the intake front, as well as ten sprinkling devices, on a regular basis.


The purification plant strengthens water treatment responses such as ozone and chlorine treatment to supply safe tap water that citizens can trust and drink.


Joo Jin-kyung, head of Chilseo Water Purification Division, said, “We will do our best to supply safe tap water despite the worsening water quality conditions of the Nakdong River.”
