[Asia Economy Culture Young Intern Reporter] A man in his 50s who threatened a pawnshop owner with a gas gun and committed robbery after losing money at the Kangwon Land Casino was sentenced to prison.
On the 27th, the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Lee Young-jin) announced that A (57), who was indicted on charges of robbery with injury, fraud, and theft, was sentenced to six years in prison.
A was prosecuted for threatening the owner B (63) with a gas gun at a pawnshop in Jeongseon-gun on December 27 last year, hitting B's head several times when B resisted, and attempting to steal money and jewelry.
When B's husband, who was sleeping in the room at the time of the crime, rushed out, A fled and hid in a nearby motel but was urgently arrested by the police after two hours.
According to the investigation, A committed the crime to obtain gambling funds after losing all his money gambling at Kangwon Land Casino. The gas gun used in the crime was found to have been stolen from a passenger car left by a customer while A was working at a car wash.
A was also charged with stealing ten 100,000 won department store gift certificates from a customer's car at the car wash six months before the robbery, as well as charging LPG gas without paying, which were included in the indictment.
In court, A denied the charges, claiming "there was no intent to rob." However, the court judged that it was difficult to see the act as accidental, considering that A had a gas gun and gloves in his pocket from the first visit to the pawnshop.
He also claimed he did not commit the theft of the gift certificates at the car wash. However, the court did not accept this claim based on CCTV footage from the car wash and black box videos.
The court stated, "The victim likely suffered severe physical and mental pain due to this robbery," and added, "Considering the violent behavior during the urgent arrest and transport, as well as his attitude at the detention center and in court, it does not appear that he is sincerely remorseful." Furthermore, the court explained the sentencing reason, saying, "Given his multiple prior convictions and the fact that he committed this crime during the probation period of a suspended prison sentence for theft, a prison sentence is inevitable."
