[Asia Economy Reporter Seomibeum] The Korean Council of Religious Leaders (Jongjihyeop) announced on the 26th that it "actively supports the government's plan to consider the special amnesty measures for August 15." Jongjihyeop is a gathering of leaders from the seven major religious denominations in Korea.
In a petition sent to President Yoon Seok-yeol, Jongjihyeop stated, "We request the president's bold decision to gather wisdom to overcome the national crisis through the pardon and restoration of rights for politicians such as former President Lee Myung-bak, former Governor Kim Kyung-soo of Gyeongnam Province, former lawmaker Lee Seok-ki, as well as business figures like Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics."
They added, "While no one can be discriminated against before the law, opening a path for those who have devoted themselves to the nation to once again serve and sacrifice for the country and its people will be a great help in overcoming the current crisis."
Jongjihyeop includes Co-Chairman and Jogye Order Chief Executive Monk Wonhaeng, as well as co-representatives such as Na Sang-ho, Director of Won Buddhism’s Gyogwon, Son Jin-woo, Director of Confucianism’s Sungkyunkwan, Park Sang-jong, Leader of Cheondogyo, Archbishop Kim Hee-jung of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, Kim Ryeong-ha, President of the Korean Council of Ethnic Religions, and Kim Hyun-sung, Interim Representative Chairman of the Christian Council of Korea.
