Gyeongnam Province Reports 'Good' Hygiene at Local Water Purification Plants

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 25th that it has completed a special inspection for larvae at 51 water purification plants in the province.

From the 11th to the 22nd, Gyeongnam Province conducted monitoring of larvae in all processes before water purification, cleaned up environments around water purification plants where larvae might inhabit, checked the hygiene facilities of the plants, and performed larvae monitoring at each purification process on site.

An official from the province stated, “Except for Seokdong Water Purification Plant in Jinhae-gu, Changwon City, the hygiene status of 50 water purification plants in the province was good, and no abnormalities such as larvae were found during the monitoring of all water purification processes.”

They explained that micro-filters were installed at the water discharge sections of Myeongdong Water Purification Plant in Gimhae, Haman Water Purification Plant in Haman, and Haeinsa Water Purification Plant in Hapcheon, and additional fine insect screens were installed on the filter beds at Gyodong Water Purification Plant in Miryang.

According to the official, the province is independently strengthening the frequency and monitoring points of larvae monitoring, and is investing 20.022 billion KRW in the water purification plant hygiene management improvement project to promote facility improvements at the plants.

Jeong Seok-won, Director of the Climate, Environment and Forestry Bureau, said, “Taking the larvae incident at Seokdong Water Purification Plant as a lesson, we will continuously conduct inspections of water purification plants in the province to prevent recurrence of larvae incidents,” and added, “We will do our best to supply tap water that residents can drink with peace of mind.”
