Incheon Police Agency Intensifies Drunk Driving Crackdown on Highways During Summer Vacation Season Highway Drunk Driving Crackdown [Provided by Incheon Police Agency]

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 25th that it will conduct intensive crackdowns on drunk driving at highway entrances and exits throughout August in preparation for the summer vacation season.

The police will conduct continuous crackdowns at three or more major highway entrances and exits during nighttime hours (10 PM to 2 AM), when the most drunk driving accidents occur.

They also plan to strengthen drunk driving enforcement jointly with related agencies such as road management authorities at highway toll booths and rest areas.

The police will strictly respond by thoroughly investigating whether passengers in drunk driving vehicles aided the offense from the initial response stage and will book them as accomplices if applicable.

As of the end of June this year, the number of fatalities in drunk driving accidents on highways under the jurisdiction of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency was one, the same as last year, while the number of injured increased by 22.2% to 77 compared to 63 during the same period last year.

Additionally, it was found that 16 out of 41 drunk driving accidents (39%) occurred between 10 PM and 2 AM.

An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We expect a high risk of drunk driving due to increased outdoor activities and traffic volume during the summer vacation season, so we will conduct intensive crackdowns,"

and added, "To minimize public anxiety such as COVID-19 infection, we will use contactless breathalyzers and strictly adhere to quarantine rules by using disinfectants before and after enforcement."
