[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 22nd that all its domestic business sites have received 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification or recertification from the global safety science company UL Solutions.
According to Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the Suwon and Sejong plants received zero waste certification from UL Solutions, a global safety science company. The Busan plant was recertified with a Gold rating this year, following last year. The certification grades are assigned based on the proportion of waste recycled as resources at the business sites: Platinum (100%), Gold (99?95%), and Silver (94?90%). This serves as an indicator to evaluate corporate resource circulation efforts.
The average resource circulation rate at Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Suwon plant was 100%, earning a Platinum rating, while the Sejong plant recorded 96%, receiving a Gold certification.
Since setting a zero waste discharge goal in 2019, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has continuously invested in waste recycling facilities and succeeded in developing new fuels. To recycle trace amounts of copper in wastewater sludge, the company enhanced the copper coagulation facilities at the wastewater treatment plant and installed high-efficiency dehydration equipment. Over the past three years, 2,658 tons of wastewater sludge have been recycled. In particular, by changing the material of plastic items used in manufacturing processes and cafeterias and reusing them, the company reduced plastic waste by 226 tons annually, equivalent to 22.6 times the area of a soccer field.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics conducts various campaigns and social contribution activities to raise employees' awareness of resource circulation. Through the 'Used Mobile Phone Collection Campaign,' which recovers metals from discarded phones and donates the proceeds to vulnerable groups, 1,462 phones were collected over three years. Additionally, by separating and recycling milk cartons into roll tissue paper and supporting vulnerable groups, a total of 1,420 kg of milk cartons were recycled, and 1,097 rolls of tissue paper were donated.
Jang Deokhyun, CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, stated, "We prioritize environmental responsibility (Planet), pursuit of happiness for social members (People), and sustainable growth (Progress) for sustainable management. We will enhance our status as a green IT company that considers the environment throughout the entire product lifecycle by introducing responsibility in production processes."
Samsung Electro-Mechanics systematically practices social responsibility management by establishing a data-driven roadmap through its dedicated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) organization. The company's sustainable management achievements have been recognized by various evaluation agencies, including being selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for 13 consecutive years, receiving the industry's first Carbon Trust 'Environmental Footprint' certification, and being selected for the FTSE4Good Index for 11 consecutive years.
