Positive Reviews for Customized Career Path Curriculum at Daegu Dalseo High School

Daegu Dalseo High School (Principal Lee Dae-hee) is receiving positive feedback from students for its currently implemented ‘Career Customized Curriculum.’

Located in Habin-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Dalseo High School was once perceived as a so-called ‘avoided school’ among students due to its geographical location on the outskirts of Daegu, weak educational infrastructure, and negative image of the school. However, recently, it has undergone a complete transformation thanks to a revolutionary overhaul of the curriculum and the dedicated efforts of teachers committed to the school’s development.

Under the initiative called ‘Student Record Comprehensive Screening Optimized Career Customized Curriculum,’ the school has implemented MBTI tests and strength intelligence assessments for freshmen, operated 30 clubs mainly for 2nd and 3rd graders with strong major relevance, established six specialized curricula by major, and launched programs such as the Humanities Odyssey and humanities special lectures involving both students and parents. These efforts have enhanced competitiveness in the student record comprehensive screening process while opening opportunities for self-understanding and career exploration.

Additionally, as the first local humanities high school in the region, Dalseo High School introduced the online-offline hybrid class model ‘Flipped Classroom,’ enabling faster and more efficient responses to the COVID-19 situation than any other school. Furthermore, by continuously adopting student-centered teaching models such as ‘Havruta’ and ‘Visual Thinking,’ the school supports students in preparing their school life records. Other initiatives include ‘Backward Design’ classes that align learning objectives with assessment content and 35 student-selected after-school advanced programs, all serving as catalysts for academic improvement and learning efficiency.

In line with these efforts, Dalseo High School is actively expanding its facilities and establishing new learning programs. Starting with the expansion of multipurpose classrooms in 2018 funded by the Ministry of Education’s special grants, local government budgets, and foundation matching funds, the school fully remodeled its dormitory in 2019, replaced the artificial turf on the playground in 2020 using Dalseong-gun and school budgets, and last year modernized the library through education office and school budgets. A school official stated, “Next year, the school is scheduled to implement the ‘Green Smart Future School Project’ with approximately 4.5 billion KRW in Ministry of Education funding.”

Principal Lee Dae-hee of Dalseo High School said, “Thanks to the efforts and passion of all our teachers, the admission rate of our students to universities in Seoul, medical and pharmaceutical schools, teacher training colleges, and local national universities has noticeably increased over the past three years. Moreover, the satisfaction levels of enrolled students and their parents regarding school life are very high. At this stage of development, the school plans to introduce innovative changes in both educational hardware and software to ensure a comfortable learning environment and further academic advancement for our students.”
