Yeongsangang Siwon's pristine cultivation environment and thorough quality control produce glossy rice with excellent texture and stickiness
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] ‘Daesup Malgeun Damyang Rice,’ the representative brand of Damyang County, won the Grand Prize at the ‘2022 Jeonnam Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice Awards Ceremony’ held at the Seoul Hanaro Club Yangjae Branch.
The evaluation of Jeonnam’s Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice is conducted annually by Jeollanam-do, which selects and supports 10 brands each year to foster brands that lead the production and distribution of premium rice.
To ensure fairness in brand selection, six specialized institutions jointly conduct the evaluation.
These institutions perform tests on samples randomly purchased twice from retail outlets in the market, including assessments of variety mixing rate, quality, dignity, taste, heavy metals and pesticide residue inspections, as well as on-site evaluations.
‘Daesup Malgeun Damyang Rice’ is cultivated on fertile land in clean Damyang, the origin of the Yeongsan River, resulting in rice with a glossy appearance, excellent grain quality, and stickiness.
Damyang County distributes specialized cultivation manuals necessary for producing high-quality rice to farmers, standardizes cultivation techniques, and provides on-site education and consulting, quality control, and monitoring to establish a communicative support and management system.
The Damyang County Nonghyup Rice Cooperative Joint Business Corporation, which contracts and sells ‘Daesup Malgeun Damyang Rice,’ selects seeds and grows healthy and robust seedlings in advanced aseptic seedling facilities, supplying them to production farms. They have established a joint production system through fostering farmer organizations such as contract cultivation complexes and field management bodies, as well as guiding and managing contract fulfillment.
Production farms have made strenuous efforts to produce the highest quality rice by cultivating high-quality rice according to the quality management manual, thoroughly managing during the harvest season to prevent variety mixing, and adjusting combine harvester speeds to avoid rice grain breakage.
The harvested rice is milled into perfect grains at agricultural product excellence management certified facilities, undergoes strict quality inspections, and is shipped. The one-day one-stop system, milling and shipping on the same day, maintains the best taste of cooked rice.
In particular, with the completion of the integrated rice processing center, which invested a total project cost of 12.1 billion KRW for the development and re-advancement of the rice industry this year, state-of-the-art modern facilities can process 15,000 tons of rice annually, further strengthening the competitiveness of Damyang rice.
County Governor Lee Byeongno said, “As a result of the joint efforts of production farms, the Nonghyup corporation, and the administration, we won the Grand Prize and achieved the remarkable feat of being selected among the top ranks for 12 consecutive years. Damyang rice, which supplies about 1,200 tons annually to schools and public meals in major cities such as Seoul and Jeju, will continue to secure stable sales channels based on strong consumer trust and increase farmers’ income.”
