[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency will focus on cracking down on drunk driving in the province until August 21.

The provincial police agency anticipates an increase in drunk driving during the first summer vacation season after the lifting of social distancing measures and is launching a focused crackdown.

According to the provincial police, from June 1 to July 17, there were 1,091 cases of drunk driving detected in the province.

Among them, 845 cases, accounting for 77%, involved drivers who were either intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher or refused to undergo testing, resulting in license cancellations.

The police stated that they began enforcement on the 18th to prevent traffic accidents related to drunk driving, which have a high potential to lead to major accidents.

They plan to deploy maximum traffic and local police forces from all police stations in the province to conduct round-the-clock crackdowns at vacation spots, entertainment districts, restaurants, and highway entrances and exits.

Every Friday, joint intensive crackdowns will also be conducted together with the provincial police’s undercover patrol enforcement team.

To prevent the resurgence of COVID-19, the provincial police will minimize contact during alcohol testing by using contactless breathalyzers and will frequently disinfect enforcement equipment.

A police agency official said, “It is absolutely unacceptable to drive under the influence, swept up in the excitement of the vacation season,” and urged, “If you spot a vehicle that appears to be driven by someone who has been drinking, please report it immediately to 112.”
