Silver Medal Achievement in Men's High Jump with 2m35... Basim Wins 3 Consecutive Titles with 2m37
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] High jump star Woo Sang-hyeok (26, Armed Forces Athletic Corps) achieved the remarkable feat of winning South Korea's first-ever silver medal at the World Athletics Championships.
On the 19th (Korean time), Woo Sang-hyeok cleared 2m35 in the men's high jump final at the 2022 World Athletics Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA, securing second place.
The first place was claimed by the world's top high jumper, Mutaz Essa Barshim (31, Qatar), who successfully cleared 2m37. Barshim achieved his third consecutive World Championship title, a first-ever record in men's high jump history.
Although Woo Sang-hyeok could not surpass Barshim's barrier, he left an unforgettable mark in Korean sports history, especially in athletics. Among Korean athletes, only Kim Hyun-sub (20km race walk, bronze in Daegu 2011) has won a medal at the outdoor World Athletics Championships.
Woo Sang-hyeok's achievement surpasses Kim Hyun-sub's record, marking the best performance by a Korean athlete in World Championships history.
Standing 188cm tall, Woo Sang-hyeok maintained a weight of 65?66kg through diet management while competing in this tournament.
In a media interview, Woo Sang-hyeok stated, "This is just the beginning. I will work harder to create an even more historic day by winning the gold medal."
