‘Dong-ae-dungae Insect Industry’ Rises in Yeongju, Gyeongbuk... Activated as a Growth Engine Becoming a New Income Source for Farms Yeongju City Hall.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] Yeongju City in Gyeongbuk is promoting the insect industry as a new growth engine for rural areas.

On the 19th, Yeongju City held a completion ceremony and evaluation meeting for the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) breeding technology, a feed insect, at the Agricultural Technology Center Experience Education Hall and the black soldier fly practical training site.

The black soldier fly is unfamiliar and difficult to breed as its cultivation is not widely disseminated, making it hard for farmers to approach.

Since April, Yeongju City has conducted breeding technology education consisting of a total of 16 sessions, including 7 theoretical courses and 9 practical courses, targeting farms breeding black soldier flies and those interested.

On this day, 15 graduates discussed issues and improvements encountered during the practical training process and explored directions for the development of the local insect industry.

In a preliminary demand survey for the useful insect industry infrastructure project aimed at generating farm income, five farms applied among the graduates. The insect industry is emerging as a new source of income in rural areas experiencing stagnation.

The black soldier fly, classified as both a feed insect and an environmental purification insect, has been fostered by the Rural Development Administration as a new blue ocean sector for the past 15 years.

In line with this movement, Yeongju City is focusing on various black soldier fly utilization technologies such as processing organic waste (food waste and livestock manure) using black soldier fly larvae, feed production for fish, livestock, and pets, and organic composting of larval frass, dedicating efforts to research trials and dissemination of breeding technology to create new income sources for farms.

Kang Hee-hoon, Director of the Technical Support Division, said, “This education establishes the foundation for the industrialization of black soldier fly insects that will lead the future of Yeongju agriculture. We will prepare development plans to ensure sustainability and inject new vitality beyond just education.”

For matters related to the feed insect project, inquiries can be made to the Technical Development Team of the Technical Support Division at Yeongju Agricultural Technology Center.
