[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] In the United States, a woman in her 20s was diagnosed with total paralysis after an artery in her neck was severed during chiropractic treatment.
According to the British Daily Mail on the 16th (local time), 28-year-old Caitlin Jensen, a student at Georgia Southern University, visited a chiropractic clinic last month for neck adjustment treatment.
While receiving treatment, Jensen heard a "crack" sound in her neck, complained of severe pain, and soon lost consciousness. She was immediately taken to the hospital. Medical staff performed emergency surgery after Jensen suffered cardiac arrest and a stroke. Jensen underwent an emergency procedure to insert a stent into the artery, regained consciousness, but brain damage progressed, resulting in total paralysis.
Test results showed that four arteries in Jensen's neck were ruptured. Jensen, who is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, can blink her eyes and move only some parts of the left side of her body.
Jensen's family said, "Jensen was perfectly healthy before this incident," and added, "She visited a chiropractor for neck adjustment on June 16, and shortly after, she was rushed to the emergency room."
Jensen's mother, Darlin, said, "My daughter told me over the phone that she felt dizzy," and added, "I thought it was nothing serious and said, 'Mom will come,' but when I arrived at the hospital, I immediately realized the situation was very serious."
Meanwhile, 'chiropractic' is a compound word from the Greek 'chiro,' meaning hand, and 'praktikos,' meaning practice, referring to a treatment method that uses hands or simple tools without drugs or surgery.
Since it is a non-surgical treatment, elderly patients or those with chronic diseases can receive it, but there have been reports of deaths or total paralysis as side effects during or after treatment.
A chiropractor unrelated to the incident told foreign media, "Although very rare, such injuries can occur," and added, "In unfortunate cases, a stroke may occur during chiropractic treatment."
Experts are calling for research on the side effects and complications of chiropractic, manual therapy, and Chuna therapy.
