Hyundai Engineering Accelerates Precon Adoption... Applying Smart Technology

Hyundai Engineering Accelerates Precon Adoption... Applying Smart Technology Perspective view of Osan Hyundai Terra Tower CMC. (Provided by Hyundai Engineering)

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Hyundai Engineering announced on the 13th that it has introduced pre-construction (precon) incorporating cutting-edge smart construction technologies for the construction of the skybridge at the knowledge industry center 'Osan Hyundai Terra Tower CMC'.

Precon refers to the overall process of reviewing potential risks that may occur during construction before the actual construction begins. It plays a role in enhancing technical safety by pre-verifying matters directly related to construction such as cost and schedule, ensuring that the construction project proceeds according to plan.

The skybridge produced by Hyundai Engineering measures 36 meters in length, 11 to 17 meters in width, 9 meters in height, and weighs as much as 400 tons. In terms of installation height, it will be installed at the highest domestic height of 110 meters above ground.

Hyundai Engineering applied advanced smart technologies such as HoloLens, 3D scanning, and IoT sensors during the precon process to improve installation accuracy and safety.

HoloLens is a technology that allows users to overlay construction drawings onto real structures through VR and MR devices without the need to review hundreds of construction drawings individually, enabling comprehensive management of all joints and member statuses without omissions or errors at a glance. 3D scanning is a technology that identifies the alignment of the building and skybridge joints through simulation using a 3D model before directly lifting the steel structure. An IoT center was also applied, which attaches sensors to safety gear such as safety harnesses and helmets worn by workers to manage the real-time status of individual safety gear usage.

A Hyundai Engineering official stated, "By applying precon, which was previously used only in some processes, to all processes from structural assembly to installation completion, we were able to improve construction accuracy and secure worker safety. Starting with the skybridge, we will actively expand the application of precon to high-difficulty special construction types and focus our capabilities on maximizing construction quality."
