When playing a round with foreign professionals at the starting hole, greetings are exchanged.
Most Korean male and female professional golfers are not well-versed in Western-style greetings and often respond vaguely. When meeting English-speaking professional golfers for the first time at the tournament starting hole, say "Hello, nice to meet you (glad to meet you), I am K. J. Choi" to introduce yourself. Then, it is necessary to state your country and profession by saying, "I’m the professional golfer from South Korea."
When greeting, say your first name first, and your last name last. The other person will respond with "Hello, nice to meet you too. I’m Tiger Woods." After the greeting, check the golf balls to be played and decide the tee shot order. Below is a conversation where a Korean male professional golfer plays in the same group with foreign professional golfers. General golfers can also use this. Learning this will help when playing rounds with foreign golfers in the future.
Pro A: Good morning, nice to meet you gentlemen. I am K.J. Choi. I’m the pro golfer from South Korea (Hello everyone. Nice to meet you. I am professional golfer Kyoung-Ju Choi from Korea).
Pro B: Hello there, my name is Mike Weir from Canada (Hello. I am Mike Weir from Canada).
Pro C: I’m Ernie Els from South Africa. Nice to meet you all, and good luck today (I am Ernie Els from South Africa. Nice to meet you, and good luck today).
Pro A: Okay, it’s tee-off time. Before we start let’s do a ball check of the brands and numbers. Mine are Titleist 3’s (It’s start time. Before we begin, let’s check the brand and number of the balls. Mine are Titleist number 3).
Pro B: I’ve got Callaway 1’s (I have Callaway number 1).
