[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, formerly known as the Unification Church, announced on the 11th that the mother of the suspect who shot former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had recently attended church events once a month.
The Unification Church stated in a press release on the 11th, "The suspect's mother has been attending the Family Federation's church events once a month."
It added, "The suspect's claim that he targeted former Prime Minister Abe, a top Japanese leader, because Abe sent a video message to our federation is not understandable from a common-sense perspective."
The organization said, "We are deeply shocked by the shooting and death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and we first express our sincere condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family and the Japanese people."
Earlier, Japanese media reported statements indicating that Tetsuya Yamagami harbored resentment toward the religion his mother attended and committed the crime for that reason.
