[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office announced on the 11th that it will conduct special surveillance and crackdowns from July to August to prevent illegal environmental pollution activities such as unauthorized discharge of pollutants during the summer season.
This surveillance and crackdown will be carried out through patrols of major industrial complexes and upstream water source areas within the jurisdiction, as well as special inspections of business sites suspected of poor environmental management.
Patrols will be conducted to prevent unauthorized wastewater discharge in seven major industrial complexes located in Gwangju and Jeonnam, including Yeosu National Industrial Complex, and six upstream areas of large-scale water sources such as Juam Dam. Special inspections will be carried out targeting wastewater discharge business sites near rivers that fail to meet water quality targets according to the Water Environment Management Plan (Watancheon, Hwangryonggang, Gomakwoncheon), and small-scale (4~5 types) wastewater discharge business sites with high risk of water pollution due to poor management during the vacation season.
Additionally, as part of prior publicity to promote compliance awareness, a cooperation letter for self-inspection was sent at the end of June to 1,600 business sites discharging highly toxic wastewater within the jurisdiction.
Kim Seung-hee, head of the Yeongsan River Office, stated, “The summer season is a time when management of environmental facilities can be vulnerable due to vacations and other factors, so we ask the relevant business sites to conduct self-inspections of related facilities and ensure thorough management.”
