Last Year 3-2 Plant Followed by This Year's 1 Plant Recycling Rate Verified at 96%
First in Wafer Industry to Achieve Certification for All Sites
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] SK Siltron, the only semiconductor wafer manufacturing company in Korea, has become the first in the industry to receive the 'Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)' Gold rating for all its business sites from the global safety science company UL Solutions.
On the 7th, SK Siltron announced that following the industry-first verification of its Plant 3 and Plant 2 last year, it has now additionally obtained verification for Plant 1, completing verification for all its business sites.
The ZWTL verification is a system conducted by UL Solutions, a globally recognized safety science specialist company, which certifies business sites with excellent waste recycling rates. The waste recycling rate evaluates the level of recycling of waste generated at the site and assigns ratings such as Platinum (100% recycling rate), Gold (95-99%), and Silver (90-94%) accordingly.
Among SK Siltron's three business sites, the Gumi Plant 3, which produces the market-leading 300mm wafers, was the first in the wafer industry to receive the ZWTL Gold rating in May last year. Plant 3's waste recycling rate was 99%, close to the Platinum rating.
In July, Plant 2 achieved a recycling rate of 98%, and now Plant 1 has achieved 96%, all earning the Gold rating. UL stated that SK Siltron's acquisition of the ZWTL certification, continuing since last year, is the first and only case in the global semiconductor silicon wafer industry.
SK Siltron is leading ESG management in the wafer industry by acquiring numerous global initiatives not only in ZWTL but also in the environmental sector. Through continuous consultations with global semiconductor customers, it has identified ESG management needs and established and executed differentiated and challenging goals.
