Korea Federation of SMEs, Ministry of Environment, and Surface Treatment Association Sign Multilateral MOU
Enabling Autonomous and Automatic Monitoring of Environmental Regulation Violations
"Support System Implementation Expected to Reduce Administrative Sanctions and Accidents"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The 'Integrated Environmental Safety Management System,' which can reduce the administrative burden of environmental regulations, will be established and operated at the Surface Treatment Association by the end of this year.
The Korea Federation of SMEs announced on the 6th that it signed a multilateral business agreement with the Ministry of Environment, the Korea Surface Treatment Industry Cooperative, and the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute. This agreement was made for the pilot project to establish the Integrated Environmental Safety Management System for the surface treatment industry.
Attendees included Kim Ki-moon, Chairman of the Korea Federation of SMEs; Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment; Park Pyung-jae, Chairman of the Korea Surface Treatment Industry Cooperative; and Lee Woo-won, Director of the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute.
The agreement was signed after the Surface Treatment Association and the Korea Federation of SMEs proposed the introduction of a self-diagnosis system for small and medium enterprises to comply with environmental regulations, which the Ministry of Environment agreed to accept.
The Integrated Environmental Safety Management System to be introduced through this agreement will support the construction of a database (DB) related to the implementation of more than 13 environmental laws and regulations, as well as periodic updates according to legislative amendments.
Companies adopting the system will be able to easily check compliance with legal standards by entering information on chemical substances, pollutant emissions, and related facilities. They will also be able to search for regulatory compliance requirements and immediately print implementation and inspection reports.
Through this, it is expected that violations of environmental regulations can be autonomously and automatically monitored, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management performance can be effectively managed.
The Integrated Environmental Safety Management System is scheduled to be piloted and operated at the Surface Treatment Association by the end of this year, and after an effectiveness analysis process, expansion to other industries will also be considered.
Chairman Kim said, "I am grateful to the Ministry of Environment for promoting the introduction of a system for small and medium enterprises to comply with environmental regulations and ESG management through proactive administration, and I ask that obstacles to management be boldly removed to create a business-friendly environment in the future."
Chairman Park said, "If a legally compliant management support system specialized for the surface treatment (plating) industry is established and advanced through this business agreement, it is expected that the administrative burden of environmental regulations on member companies will be alleviated, and the number of administrative sanctions and accidents will decrease."
