[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] LS Cable & System recently announced on the 6th that it has succeeded in the domestic development of liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging cables and is moving towards commercialization.

The liquid-cooling method reduces the risk of thermal runaway caused by conductor temperature rise, which was a problem in the existing air-cooling method. It allows more current to be sent relative to the conductor size, improving device efficiency. Another advantage is that the cable thickness and weight are reduced by nearly half, making it easier for elderly and weak people to handle.

According to LS Cable & System, high temperatures are generated in charging cables during high-voltage fast charging. The liquid-cooling method controls the conductor temperature rise by circulating coolant inside the cable. This significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway accidents.

The liquid-cooling method is used in ultra-fast chargers of 400 kW or more, which are expected to expand in distribution due to recent domestic electric vehicle technology standardization. The existing 50 kW-250 kW fast chargers mainly used air-cooling methods. Ultra-fast chargers charge more than twice as fast as fast chargers.

LS Cable & System improved the cooling method of existing overseas products to reduce the possibility of failure caused by coolant leakage. Additionally, with this domestic development, they secured new patents, which is expected to enhance the performance and quality competitiveness of charging cables. Until now, liquid-cooled charging cables have been monopolized in the market by European companies through patents, leading to reliance on imports.

An LS Cable & System official said, "We have completed patent registration related to the cooling method in the United States and Japan and are in the process of filing domestically," adding, "Commercialization is also underway with major domestic and foreign charger manufacturers."

LS Cable & System supplies electric vehicle motor windings, high-voltage harnesses, aluminum wires, and charging guns to domestic and foreign automakers and battery manufacturers. They are also expanding their electric vehicle parts business by jointly participating in national projects such as the 'Development of Mobile Ultra-Fast Chargers for Construction Machinery.'
