Military Manpower Administration judges no active-duty doctors available... Filed complaints twice
Police "Applied to suspend investigation last month"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] It has been confirmed that Eun Seong-su, former Financial Services Commission chairman under the Moon Jae-in administration, has had his son reported to the police on charges of violating the Military Service Act.
On the 5th, the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul announced that they are investigating Eun Mo (30), the second son of former Chairman Eun, on charges of violating the Military Service Act. The Military Manpower Administration reportedly filed complaints with the police against Eun on May 26 and 31 for violations of Articles 86 and 94 of the Military Service Act, respectively.
Eun obtained permanent residency in the United States last year and returned to Korea in January this year. In the same month, he received permission from the Military Manpower Administration for a three-month overseas trip for the purpose of "household arrangements" and departed for the U.S.
Afterward, Eun did not return even after the three months expired and applied for an extension of his overseas travel. However, the Military Manpower Administration rejected this and ordered him to return by May. When Eun refused to comply and did not return, the Military Manpower Administration filed a complaint against him with the police.
In December last year, Eun was also reported by the Military Manpower Administration for violating the Military Service Act, but at that time, the administration withdrew the complaint after reviewing Eun’s explanatory materials. Considering the purpose of Eun’s overseas travel permit application, the Military Manpower Administration interpreted that he had no intention to serve actively and thus filed an additional complaint.
The police have currently consolidated the cases and reportedly decided to "suspend the investigation" on the 22nd of last month.
A police official stated, "There are difficulties in investigating the suspect at the moment, so we have applied to suspend the investigation. However, if Eun returns to the country, we plan to continue the investigation."
