[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] SsangYong Motor launched the mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) Torres on the 5th. As a model continuing the lineage of popular SsangYong SUVs such as Korando and Musso, it set a record for the highest number of pre-orders on the first day ever, raising expectations that it will be a signal for the normalization of SsangYong Motor's management.

On the same day, SsangYong held a new car launch event for Torres at the Nest Hotel in Incheon. This was the first offline new car launch event in three years since the Very New Tivoli in June 2019. Attendees included KG Group Chairman Kwak Jae-sun, selected as the final prospective acquirer of SsangYong Motor, Seon Mok-rae, chairman of the SsangYong Motor labor union, Park Kyung-rae, representative of the commercial creditors' group, and Park Hyun-gi, chairman of the SsangYong Motor dealership council.

Jung Yong-won, SsangYong Motor's manager, said, "Torres was developed with utmost effort to accurately understand and realize what customers want and expect," adding, "We will continue to introduce new models that well reflect SsangYong Motor's identity."

The introduction of the new car and marketing strategy was handled by Lucy, a virtual human who is active as an advertising model and influencer. Lucy said, "For some, I am the first SUV, and for others, another SUV that realizes the dream romance they have longed for, a genuine SUV," adding, "I will accompany customers on thrilling adventures anytime and anywhere."

The new vehicle combines a 1.5ℓ turbo gasoline engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission (Aisin), delivering a maximum output of 170 horsepower and a peak torque of 28.6 kg·m. Compared to the previous engine, acceleration performance at start-up has improved by 10%, and acceleration performance in real driving conditions has increased by 5%. Among the electronic stability program (ESP) functions, a new multi-collision prevention system has been applied, which automatically activates the brakes for 10 seconds if the driver loses control of the vehicle after a primary collision. High-strength steel is used for 78% of the body, the highest level in its class.

An AI-based advanced connected car system, Infocon, has been applied. If the airbags deploy due to an accident, an airbag deployment notification service is provided free of charge for 10 years, allowing the driver to receive appropriate assistance through the Infocon call center. Various customization items are available to suit user preferences, such as a storage box attached to the rear C-pillar, side steps, door spot lamps, and roof flat carriers. The price is 27.4 million KRW for the T5 (based on reduced individual consumption tax) and 30.2 million KRW for the T7.

Looking at the previously revealed design, the exterior gives a strong impression with bold lines and a three-dimensional feel, while the interior exudes a futuristic image by minimizing physical buttons. The rear seats have a reclining function for comfort and can be folded down to accommodate more cargo when needed. The cargo space is 703 liters, expanding to 1,662 liters with the rear seats folded. Exterior colors include seven options such as dark green, and five two-tone colors with a black roof, totaling 12 colors. The interior comes in four colors, including black.

Manager Jung said, "Just as the path SsangYong Motor has walked became the history of SUVs in Korea, through the unprecedented SUV Torres, we will write history anew, in a way that is true to SsangYong Motor."
