[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] The number of new COVID-19 cases is showing an increasing trend, approaching 20,000 for the first time in 40 days.


According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 5th, as of midnight that day, 18,147 new COVID-19 cases were added, bringing the total cumulative cases to 18,413,997. Imported cases from overseas were 171, marking over 100 cases for the 12th consecutive day.


The number of new cases nearly doubled compared to a week ago on the 28th of last month (9,894 cases). It also increased by 11,894 cases compared to the previous day. The daily cases approaching 20,000 is the first time since May 26 (18,805 cases).


The weekly incidence rate also increased. The weekly COVID-19 incidence rate per 100,000 population rose from 13.6 on the 28th of last month to 20.3 on this day.


The number of critically ill patients hospitalized was 54, down by 2 from the previous day. The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 6.8%, with 6.6% in the metropolitan area and 7.4% in non-metropolitan areas.


The number of new COVID-19 deaths was 2. One was aged 80 or older, and the other was in their 70s, both elderly. The total cumulative deaths reached 24,576, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.


With 15,298 new patients added to home treatment the previous day, the total number of patients currently under home treatment is 58,782. Among them, 2,322 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions.
