Chungnam Cheonsuman Issued 'High Water Temperature Advisory' Level

[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] A high water temperature advisory stage has been issued for the Cheonsuman coastal area in Chungnam.

On the 5th, the Chungnam Provincial Office and the National Institute of Fisheries Science announced that as of 2 p.m. the previous day, a high water temperature advisory stage was issued for coastal areas nationwide, including Cheonsuman in Chungnam.

The advisory stage is issued 7 days before a warning; when the water temperature reaches 28 degrees Celsius, a warning is issued, and if it remains above 28 degrees for more than 3 days, an alert is issued.

The advisory stage for the Cheonsuman coastal area was taken in anticipation that the coastal water temperature would reach 28 degrees due to the recent prolonged heatwave.

The province has formed the "Cheonsuman High Water Temperature Damage Response Team" in cooperation with related organizations such as the West Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the National Institute of Fisheries Science and is strengthening measures to minimize damage from high water temperatures, including monitoring of fish farms.

The on-site response team, in collaboration with the West Sea Fisheries Research Institute and city and county governments, will manage aquaculture organisms by prohibiting the selection and movement of fish in fish farms, suspending feed supply, and improving the aquaculture environment through sufficient dissolved oxygen supply, bottom water exchange, and tidal flow circulation.

Earlier, in preparation for the heatwave, the province established a comprehensive response plan for high water temperatures in Cheonsuman starting in May and has been focusing on implementing damage prevention measures.

Additionally, they held public-private cooperation meetings with fisheries in the Cheonsuman area and on-site meetings with fishermen to check preparations for high water temperatures and provided guidance on subscribing to aquaculture product disaster insurance.

In case of damage, they plan to focus on rapid recovery activities such as identifying damage details by city and county, conducting joint damage investigations, and establishing support plans for fishermen.

Jang Min-gyu, Director of the Fisheries Resources Division of the province, said, “Active cooperation and response from fishermen are most important to minimize damage to farmed fish during high water temperature periods,” and added, “We ask for much interest and cooperation in the activities of the on-site response team.”
