The County Plans to Continuously Connect with Residents through Military and Maritime History and Culture Research
[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] On the 1st, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do held an academic presentation for university students on the theme of the region's maritime history at the Haenam Cultural Center.
This presentation was organized as a final showcase of the achievements compiled by the Mokpo National University Student Symposium Team through the university's academic symposium in November last year and the 11th National Maritime Culture Scholars Conference, presented to the residents of Haenam-gun.
The academic presentation began with a keynote speech by Professor Kang Bong-ryong titled "Haenam is the pinnacle of Korea's maritime cultural geography," followed by eight thematic presentations by students and a Q&A session with attending residents.
The thematic presentations included ▲External exchanges of the ancient Haenam Baekpoman area port powers (Team Leader Seon Seung-gyu, then a junior) ▲Production and maritime distribution of Haenam Hwawon’s "early celadon" (Kang Seung-jae, junior) ▲The Mongol-Korean allied forces’ attack on Jindo Sambyeolcho and Haenam Samjiwon (Lee Jae-yong, senior) ▲Establishment of the Jeolla Naval Command system and Haenam’s naval base (Kim Hyo-joo, senior) ▲The Eulmyo Japanese Disturbance and Haenam Dallyangjin (Lee Go-eun, junior) ▲The Battle of Myeongnyang during the Japanese invasions of Korea and Haenam’s Useuyeong (Kim Jeong-ho, junior) ▲The Yun family of Haenam’s island maritime-friendly perception and island life (Lee Hye-joo, junior) ▲Maritime culture and maritime exchanges of Haenam as seen through folklore (Oh Won-bin, senior). ▲The status and prospects of Haenam’s "Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project" (Kim Sang-woo, junior) was not presented due to the student’s personal circumstances but can be found in the booklet.
Professor Kang Bong-ryong stated, “Located at the junction of the West Sea and South Sea and consisting of three peninsulas?Haenam Peninsula, Sani Peninsula, and Hwawon Peninsula?Haenam represents the pinnacle of Korea’s maritime culture. Nevertheless, this is the first comprehensive compilation of Haenam’s maritime history. Although it is the work of undergraduate students, its significance as the first effort is by no means small.”
A county official said, “We plan to continue communication with residents about historical culture through this academic presentation. We hope this event will serve as a catalyst for interest in Haenam’s maritime history and be a valuable growth opportunity for the participating students.”
