[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Seoyul] The possession of firearms will be prohibited in most public places in New York State, including Times Square and the subway in New York City.

According to major foreign media, on the 1st (local time), the New York State Legislature passed a bill strengthening gun control that designates public places in New York State as gun-free zones. The targeted locations include government buildings, medical facilities, religious institutions, parks, schools, and subways where crowds gather.

Places handling alcoholic beverages or recreational marijuana, as well as museums, theaters, stadiums, and large plazas such as Times Square, are also included.

The bill also includes measures requiring completion of a safety education course to obtain a gun license and submission of social network service (SNS) accounts for pre-verification of gun owners.

During the bill review process, Republican lawmakers voiced opposition, but since Democrats hold an overwhelming majority in New York State, the bill passed smoothly.

Once Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul signs the bill, it will take effect on September 1.
