[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] LG, which is transforming its business structure into advanced industries such as cutting-edge bio materials, battery recycling, automotive electronics, and robotics, is now stepping into AI job creation. The company has partnered with the government to nurture 4,000 young AI talents annually.
On the 30th, LG announced that it held a 'Youth Employment Support Membership' enrollment event at LG Science Park in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Although the membership campaign was initiated during the Moon Jae-in administration, it is well-received as a policy that provides young people with real work experience in large corporations rather than just a simple 'spec' credential.
At the event, the Ministry of Employment and Labor recognized LG's youth AI talent development program, 'LG AIMUS,' as part of the membership program. LG recently announced that it plans to nurture more than 4,000 young AI talents annually through LG AIMUS. Any young person aged 19 to 29 with basic AI knowledge and coding skills, regardless of academic background or major, can apply to LG AIMUS. The program is conducted online over two months. Enrolled youths can attend core theoretical lectures by six of the country's top AI experts free of charge. By participating in the 'LG AI Hackathon,' they can gain practical experience by working directly with industrial field data and solving problems.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor agreed to assist in promoting participant recruitment for LG AIMUS as part of the membership. They will collaborate with LG in various ways to nurture young AI talents, including awarding the Minister's Prize to hackathon winners. The number of companies enrolled in the membership has increased to 54.
Minister of Employment and Labor Lee Jeong-sik said in his remarks, "In the face of technological innovation and rapid development, securing excellent talent is crucial for the further growth of our industry, and active corporate roles are necessary. I appreciate LG's proactive efforts to nurture 4,000 young AI talents annually, and it is especially meaningful that the program is conducted online, ensuring fair participation opportunities for young people nationwide."
He added, "The government will actively promote the corporate-led 'Youth Leap Project,' which provides opportunities desired by young people such as work experience, job competency training, and fair recruitment. Through this, we will strengthen collaboration with companies and support efforts to enhance youth employment."
Lee Myung-kwan, President of LG Human Resources Development Center, said, "In the current situation where digital competency enhancement and job creation opportunities are urgently needed for the future leaders?the youth?LG deeply sympathizes with the government's direction for nurturing young talents and will spare no active support. Through 'LG AIMUS,' we expect university students to build practical AI skills and improve their employment competitiveness, contributing to the expansion of the AI industry ecosystem."
The event was attended by Minister Lee Jeong-sik, Vice Chairman Lee Dong-geun of the Korea Employers Federation, Lee Myung-kwan, President of LG Human Resources Development Center, Bae Kyung-hoon, Director of LG AI Research Institute, and Kim Yi-kyung, Head of HR and Development Team at LG Corporation.
