Fingerprint Confirmation of One Corpse Identified as Mother Jo Yang
Jo Couple's Debt of 100 Million Won and Loan of 30 Million Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The family of three, including 11-year-old Jo Yuna, who went missing in Wando, Jeollanam-do, were ultimately found dead. The police believe that Mr. and Mrs. Jo, unable to endure financial hardship caused by recent crashes in cryptocurrency investments, took their own lives.
On the 29th at 12:20 PM, the Coast Guard salvaged an Audi passenger car that had sunk near Songgok Port on Sinjido Island, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do. Inside the car, Jo Yuna, her father Mr. Jo (36), and her mother Ms. Lee (35) were found deceased.
Fingerprints of one body confirmed as Jo Yuna’s mother... Identification of other bodies underway
The driver's seat contained the decomposed body of an adult male, while the back seat held the decomposed bodies of an adult female and a girl presumed to be Jo Yuna. Fingerprints from one of the bodies confirmed it was Jo Yuna’s mother, and the identities of the other bodies are still being verified.
The police believe, based on the gender, age group, and clothing captured on CCTV, that the family who left Gwangju last month to live for a month and lost contact around Songgok Port is indeed the Jo family.
The passenger car was found overturned underwater about 80 meters from the breakwater at Songgok Port the previous afternoon. Due to murky water and dark window tinting, the police could not visually confirm if anyone was inside at the time, but they suspected the Jo family was in the car. After taking measures to prevent loss, the vehicle was salvaged that morning.
All car doors except the trunk were closed, and there was no evidence that any occupant tried to escape from inside.
Multiple searches for 'Luna cryptocurrency' before applying for off-campus experiential learning... 100 million KRW debt and 30 million KRW loan
Police investigations revealed that the Jo couple had searched multiple times on the internet for terms such as 'Wando tide times' and 'Luna cryptocurrency' from mid-last month, before applying for their daughter’s off-campus experiential learning.
According to the police, the couple suffered losses due to the crash of the Luna cryptocurrency they had invested in, which worsened their financial difficulties. The police also confirmed that the couple had credit card debts amounting to 100 million KRW under their names and a loan of about 30 million KRW under Ms. Lee’s name from financial institutions.
Meanwhile, the police plan to determine the cause of death through autopsy and examination. The parents submitted an application via the school website on the 17th of last month to take off-campus experiential learning in Jeju from May 19 to June 15. However, instead of Jeju, they stayed at a pension in Wando from May 24, and CCTV captured them leaving the pension by car around 11 PM on May 30.
