'Party Ban Measures' Temporarily Introduced in 2019... Institutionalized as Policy
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] Accommodation sharing company Airbnb announced on the 28th (local time) that it will globally ban parties held at its accommodations.
According to the U.S. economic media CNBC, Airbnb announced on the same day that it will permanently ban parties and events that disturb the surroundings. 'Party houses,' where accommodations are booked for one night to hold large-scale events, are also prohibited.
In 2019, after a shooting incident at one accommodation resulted in five deaths, Airbnb imposed a temporary ban on using Airbnb as a party venue, which has now been made permanent.
In August 2020, as COVID-19 spread, the ban on all parties was expanded globally. Airbnb later stated that "reports of parties decreased by 44% compared to the previous year."
Airbnb said, "Since announcing a temporary ban on all parties and events in August 2020, the effectiveness of this measure has been proven," adding, "Therefore, we officially codify this ban as our policy today."
However, in reality, it is impossible to monitor all users who rent remote accommodations and hold parties when the owner is absent. Accordingly, Airbnb stated that it will take measures ranging from temporary account suspension to expulsion against users who violate the party ban. Last year, about 6,600 users were temporarily suspended for violating the party ban.
