[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stated, "It makes no sense for the architect of Sojusung (Income-Led Growth) to be sitting at the Korea Development Institute (KDI)," effectively urging Director Hong Jang-pyo to resign voluntarily.
According to the Prime Minister's Office on the 29th, during a press briefing with reporters the previous day, when asked about the positions of heads of government-funded research institutions such as the KDI director and the chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Prime Minister Han said, "They need to be changed."
When asked if it would be difficult to replace them due to their long remaining terms, he replied, "They do not fit well with us," adding, "Time will resolve this."
This is interpreted as meaning that it is inappropriate for Director Hong, who led Sojusung as the first economic chief under the Moon Jae-in administration, to remain in his position as his philosophy and direction differ from those of the Yoon Seok-yeol government.
Chairman Jeong Hae-gu, who served as the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Policy Planning under the Moon administration and currently serves as chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, was mentioned in the same context.
Directors Hong and Jeong began their terms in May of last year.
