Second Model of Electric Vehicle Dedicated Platform
"Reducing Wind Resistance and Expanding Interior Space"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the interior and exterior design of its dedicated electric vehicle Ioniq 6 for the first time on the 28th. It is the second dedicated electric vehicle built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and is a sedan model.
The design features a streamlined silhouette completed with curves. The company explained that it aimed to realize an aerodynamic shape. Hyundai calls its new design type for the electrification era the ‘Electrified Streamliner.’ The streamliner refers to a smooth, streamlined design that minimizes wind resistance.
The long wheelbase between the front and rear axles gives it a unique proportion. A large interior space is also an advantage. The front features parametric pixel lights, giving a futuristic impression. The parametric pixels are formed with over 700 pixels on the front LED lamps and the rear spoiler.
Hyundai also applied a new emblem for the first time. Instead of a three-dimensional chrome emblem, it is made in a thin, flat aluminum form. The new emblem will be applied to future Hyundai models as is. The rear spoiler incorporates parametric pixel auxiliary brake lights, creating new lighting effects. The cladding below the rear bumper gives a dynamic impression.
The theme of the interior design is ‘Inside Out.’ The company describes it as a cocoon-shaped interior reminiscent of a silkworm cocoon. The flat floor in the passenger compartment is possible because it is an electric vehicle, enhancing space utilization. The control functions needed by the driver are concentrated on one side of the dashboard to reduce distractions. The center console is a bridge type, long and tall in shape.
The interactive pixel light function displays various information through lighting depending on the vehicle’s status such as charging, power on/off, and voice recognition. It is applied for the first time in the Ioniq 6. The steering wheel includes four dot-shaped lights that operate according to functions.
The interior ambient mood lamp combining two colors is the first among Hyundai models. There are 64 options each for the upper and lower parts, allowing 4,096 combinations. The digital side mirrors borrow the winglet shape found at the tips of airplane wings. The integrated dashboard and second-row door armrests are designed to evoke home furniture.
Various control buttons on the door trim have been moved to the center console. Reducing thickness enhances the sense of interior space and adds various storage compartments. The company also emphasized sustainability by applying interior and exterior paint using recycled tire paint and plant-based materials, as well as using eco-friendly leather and recycled plastic fabrics for the seats.
Lee Sang-yeop, head of Hyundai Design Center, said, "It is an emotional fusion of technology and aesthetics," adding, "It is a distinctive streamlined design created by engineers and designers working together with a customer-centric value in mind for the electrification era, providing a personal sanctuary in the city."
On the same day as unveiling the Ioniq 6 design, Hyundai also released a 3D design unveil film on digital billboards at major landmarks worldwide. It will be simultaneously screened at Seoul K-Pop Square, London Piccadilly Circus, and New York Times Square Big Kahuna. The new car will hold its first public unveiling event next month and reveal detailed specifications.
