[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam Province, received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in the improvement category of the ‘2021 Traffic Culture Index’ from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority on the 27th.

This award ceremony was held by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, commissioned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to compare and evaluate the traffic culture index among 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide, rewarding local governments with excellent traffic culture levels and assessing the results of autonomous competition among local governments.

The award categories are divided into Excellent Local Government Awards (Minister’s Award for 1st place in cities with populations over 300,000 and cities/counties/districts under 300,000, and Chairman’s Awards for 2nd and 3rd places) and Improvement Local Government Awards (Minister’s Award for 1st place, Chairman’s Awards for 2nd and 3rd places). Hapcheon-gun achieved the remarkable feat of ranking 1st nationwide in improvement rate and received the 1st place Minister’s Award.

Every year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport evaluates 229 cities, counties, and districts across the country based on 18 indicators in three categories: driving behavior, pedestrian behavior, and traffic safety. Hapcheon-gun’s traffic culture index scored 85.06 points, earning an A grade and ranking 4th among all 79 counties nationwide.

In 2020, it scored 66.38 points with an E grade, but in 2021, it rose by an impressive 18.68 points, achieving the highest improvement rate in the country.

To improve traffic culture, Hapcheon-gun has continuously implemented measures such as ‘establishing its own plan to improve the traffic culture index,’ ‘intensive crackdown on five major illegal parking zones,’ ‘early establishment of Safe Speed 5030 with signs and road markings,’ ‘maintenance and follow-up management of traffic facilities,’ ‘improvement of children protection zone facilities,’ ‘focused improvement of accident-prone sections,’ and ‘traffic safety education for the elderly in each town and township.’

Park Mu-gon, head of the Economic Transportation Division, expressed gratitude for the citizens’ compliance with traffic laws in daily life, saying, “As a result of maintaining traffic facilities and conducting guidance activities targeting citizens to establish a traffic culture that prioritizes the safety of residents, unexpectedly good results have appeared.”
