"Income of Korean Americans in California, USA, Among Lower Ranks of Asian Americans... 12.7% Are in Poverty"

[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] A survey has revealed that the income of Korean Americans living in California ranks among the lower tier within the overall Asian American population.

'AAPI Data,' which provides demographic and policy research on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations, stated this in a report titled "Health, Mental Health, and Social Welfare Needs of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in California," published on the 23rd (local time).

According to the report, the median income of Korean households was $76,880 (approximately 99.64 million KRW), ranking 16th among 22 Asian countries (including others). This figure did not reach the overall Asian median income of $101,253 (approximately 131.22 million KRW).

Furthermore, 12.7% of Korean Americans were classified as living in poverty. The report noted that this rate was the eleventh highest among the 22 countries.

Regarding housing statistics, 54% of Korean Americans were found to be renters. This was the eighth highest renter proportion among the 22 Asian groups. Meanwhile, 46% lived in owner-occupied housing, indicating that the renter proportion exceeded the owner proportion.

In comparison, only 30% of Japanese Americans were renters, with 70% owning their homes. Among Chinese Americans, 32% were renters and 68% were homeowners. The Asian group with the highest homeownership rate was Taiwanese Americans, with 75% owning their homes and 25% renting.
