[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jonghwa] Environmentally friendly volume-based waste bags that naturally decompose are being developed. Green Package Solution Co., Ltd. (GPS), a company that commercialized the eco-friendly packaging product '6OUT' which naturally decomposes within six months, has embarked on developing naturally decomposable eco-friendly volume-based waste bags.

Eco-friendly new material company GPS signed a "business agreement for research, development, and introduction of carbon-neutral, eco-friendly volume-based waste bags" with the Incheon Metropolitan City Seo-gu Facilities Management Corporation on the 24th, and plans to complete the development of eco-friendly volume-based waste bags as soon as possible.

GPS processes eco-friendly new materials with special treatments to secure the necessary durability, standardization, and mass production capability for industrial packaging, and manufactures and supplies the eco-friendly packaging product '6OUT' to large companies in the electronics, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical sectors.

With this agreement, once carbon-neutral eco-friendly volume-based waste bags are developed, it is expected that many long-standing issues at landfill sites will be significantly improved. Until now, the Incheon Metropolitan City Seo-gu Facilities Management Corporation has been landfilling about half of the volume-based waste bags due to the limitations of the waste incineration plant. The landfill capacity itself is severely saturated, making the natural decomposition of volume-based waste bags urgently needed.

An official from the corporation stated, "Because volume-based waste bags do not naturally decompose, even the naturally decomposable waste inside the bags fails to decompose or is delayed," adding, "The corporation has been seeking a solution for 10 years, and the conclusion is that the volume-based waste bags themselves must naturally decompose. The development of naturally decomposable volume-based waste bags will be an innovative solution to the landfill challenges."

GPS CEO An Seonghoon said, "We will promote mutual cooperation to develop materials that replace existing petrochemical vinyl by using plant-based biomass raw materials," and added, "We plan to develop innovative volume-based waste bags that naturally decompose within six months when buried in soil at room temperature, overcoming the limitations of existing biodegradable vinyls that only decompose at specific temperatures."
