Chonnam National University Selected as Finalist for 'Regional Functional Innovation Talent Development Project'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University (President Jeong Seong-taek) announced on the 23rd that it has been finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP)'s 'Regional Intelligent Innovation Talent Training Project.'

Chonnam National University formed a mammoth consortium consisting of 10 institutions and 113 companies, including Gwangju City, to apply for this project, which the Ministry of Science and ICT and IITP opened for public competition since March. As a result, it was selected as the Honam region base center for the Regional Intelligent Innovation Talent Training Project.

The Chonnam National University Regional Intelligent Innovation Talent Training Project plans to cultivate DAVINCI-type advanced personnel by linking innovative education and joint research with industries targeting small and medium-sized enterprises in Gwangju's five major industries (G5): mobility, energy, healthcare & medical, cultural contents & arts, and production, manufacturing & management.

From this year, Chonnam National University will receive about 19.5 billion KRW over 8 years (2.6 billion KRW annually, 1.3 billion KRW in the first year), supported by 15 billion KRW from the national government, 1.5 billion KRW from local governments, and 3 billion KRW from the private sector.

The university will establish an AI+ICT Convergence Cooperative Program department, develop curricula specialized in Gwangju's five major industries, and prepare for graduate school establishment by building practice and research labs. Starting in 2023, it plans to recruit new students among local workers and full-time students to conduct intelligent innovation education and research.

Ten regional institutions and 113 local companies will participate to solve corporate field problems in the G5 sectors by researching AI+ICT convergence technology-based challenging technologies, new technologies, and safety technologies.

The core projects include ▲ operating a master's degree program for local industry workers (90% tuition support for small businesses, 80% for medium-sized businesses) ▲ joint development and research among industry, academia, and research institutes (research on ICT-based automotive embedded electronics technology, intelligent diagnostic engine system based on effective residual capacity prediction of high-voltage batteries, medical imaging-based intelligent Needle Guidance System, AI-based cultural and artistic content creation technology, AI-based smart manufacturing platform, etc.) ▲ operating research centers within the Campus Innovation Park and advanced industrial complex campuses.

Chonnam National University, centered on the G5-AICT Center (Director Professor Kim Jin-sul of the Department of Computer Information and Communication Engineering), plans to lead national strategic industries and cultivate global creative talents through next-generation AICT convergence education based on AI and ICT convergence technologies.

This project involves 32 faculty members from four universities including Honam University, KAIST, and Korea Energy Engineering University, and about 101 students annually.
