World Cup Park Recruiting Participants for 'Wood Carving' Program Using Park Trees

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government will recruit participants for the July Woodcarving Program using fallen park trees from World Cup Park starting at 10 a.m. on the 25th of this month.

Established in April, the Woodcarving Program is one of the popular reservation-based leisure programs operated by the Western Park Greenery Office. As handmade hobbies such as rattan crafts and knitting, where participants create various accessories with their own hands, have gained popularity among younger generations, woodcarving has also become a familiar leisure activity accessible anywhere.

The woodcarving at World Cup Park utilizes fallen trees within the park. In particular, the black locust trees, which make up about half of the fallen trees on the park’s slopes, are classified as high-quality wood due to their durability.

The materials for the woodcarving program are sourced from fallen trees that have been cut and prepared by activists from the ‘Noeul Park Citizens’ Group,’ who maintain the trees on the park’s slopes.

Another unique feature of the World Cup Park Woodcarving Program is that participants can also make simple desserts that pair well with the cooking utensils they create each month. It is a combined program where participants can enjoy both woodcarving and cooking at once.

In the July program, participants will make yogurt spoons and prepare yogurt salad using vegetables harvested through hydroponic cultivation at World Cup Park.

The program accepts applications from two teams per month. Each team completes the cooking utensils through two classes held once a week over two weeks, with classes conducted every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for 90 minutes. If you wish to participate in the July Woodcarving Program, you can apply starting on the 25th via the ‘Seoul Public Service Reservation’ website. For more details about the program, please contact the Park Leisure Division of the Western Park Greenery Office.

Lee Yong-nam, Director of the Western Park Greenery Office of Seoul City, said, “The World Cup Park Woodcarving Program is scheduled to run until December, so we hope many will join to create various cooking utensils and dishes using wood, experiencing both a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.”
