Display協 "Maintaining Technological Superiority with 'Self-Luminous Display'"

Development of Electroluminescent Display Technology
Preliminary Feasibility Planning Research Begins

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Korea Display Industry Association has officially launched a preliminary feasibility study planning research for the "Inorganic Light-Emitting Display and Ecosystem Construction Project," supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and exclusively managed by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology.

On the 23rd, the association held a kickoff meeting of the General Planning Committee at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to discuss strategic planning for the inorganic light-emitting display preliminary feasibility project.

Inorganic light-emitting displays are self-emissive displays based on inorganic materials (such as MicroLED, nano-scale LED, quantum dots) that surpass the characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). They deliver bright and clear image quality indoors and outdoors and have a lifespan more than twice that of existing products.

This technology is noted for its ability to connect panels seamlessly, enabling infinite scalability. It can be applied to all products, from ultra-small (micro) displays under 0.3 inches, automotive displays that flexibly attach to curved surfaces, transparent architectural displays, to cinema screens over 300 inches.

The meeting was attended by 19 key experts from industry, academia, and research institutes, including Samsung Display and LG Display, to discuss related technology development strategies.

The association’s strategy through this research is to maintain a super-gap to secure the global number one position in the display industry.

This research planning will establish measures to secure technology for the world’s first mass production and propose a plan to jointly build an independent supply chain with domestic panel companies based on this. The research planning project will be carried out over nine months from this month until March next year.

After collecting industry-wide feedback on the research planning project report produced as a result of the project, it will be submitted as a candidate project for the preliminary feasibility study next year.
