Gyeongbuk Province Envisions the Future of Marine Bio on the East Coast! Gyeongbuk Provincial Government Office.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwi-yeol] From the 22nd to the 23rd, Gyeongbuk Province jointly held this year’s ‘Marine Bio Forum’ with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries at the POSCO International Hall of POSTECH.


This forum was organized to foster a hub for the high value-added marine bio industry utilizing marine resources of the East Coast of Gyeongbuk, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. It aimed to connect the local marine bio industry and provide a platform for organic cooperation, information exchange, and communication among industry, academia, research, and government sectors.


The forum was attended by over 100 experts and company representatives, including the Mayor of Pohang, officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, as well as representatives from the National Marine Biodiversity Institute, East Sea Rim Industry Research Institute, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Korea Polar Research Institute, POSTECH, Marine Bio Society, Korea Bioeconomy Society, and CJ CheilJedang.


The forum began with a keynote speech by Yoon Seok-hwan, head of research at CJ CheilJedang, followed by presentations on ▲Global Marine Bio Economy Status and Key Issues (Choi Yoon-hee, President of Korea Bioeconomy Society) ▲Challenges for Advancing as a Marine Bio Powerhouse (Jang Deok-hee, Director of Research Strategy at Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology) ▲Promising Future Bio Technologies and Marine Bio (Kim Mu-woong, Director of National Biotechnology Policy Research Center at Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology) ▲Strategies for Fostering the Marine Bio Industry Centered on Marine Biomedicals (Cha Hyung-jun, President of Marine Bio Society) ▲Development Plans for New Marine Bio Materials in the East Sea Rim (Woo Jeong-hee, Senior Researcher at East Sea Rim Industry Research Institute).


Additionally, Go Kyung-min, CEO of JDK Bio, introduced a successful case of marine bio commercialization.


On the first day of the forum, the 22nd, a special program titled ‘Marine Bio Materials Briefing Session’ was held.


Furthermore, major research institutions such as the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute showcased advanced marine bio materials they possess, alongside operating consultation booths and company exhibition booths to support technology transfer to enterprises.


Kim Nam-il, Head of the East Sea Rim Regional Headquarters of Gyeongbuk Province, stated, “In line with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ strategy to secure a leading position in the global marine bio market, the province will nurture the marine bio industry on the East Coast of Gyeongbuk as a strategic industry to establish it as a new growth engine.”
