[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Woo Sang-ho, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 22nd that he "respects" the Ethics Tribunal's decision to suspend lawmaker Choi Kang-wook's party membership for six months over sexual harassment allegations.
At the Democratic Party Emergency Response Committee meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Chairman Woo said, "The party is once again starting a new debate over the disciplinary action against lawmaker Choi," adding, "Personally, I have my own reflections on this disciplinary action against lawmaker Choi, but I believe the Ethics Tribunal's decision must be respected."
He continued, "Our Emergency Response Committee will respect the Ethics Tribunal's decision," and urged restraint, saying, "If party members become divided over this issue and start arguing and causing discord again, it may not be viewed favorably by the public."
He added, "While individuals may have different opinions on various matters decided according to the party constitution and regulations, publicly exposing these differences and turning them into clashes among supporters should all be avoided."
In addition, Chairman Woo established an internal Economic Crisis Response Committee and a Political Retaliation Investigation Response Organization within the party.
He explained, "The Economic Crisis Response Committee is a more macroeconomic policy expert body that will propose opposition party policy alternatives to proactively respond to the upcoming economic crisis," adding, "Composed of economic experts both within and outside the party, this committee will be launched as an organization that develops good policy alternatives on how to respond to the economic crisis based on the Democratic Party of Korea's policy platform." Former floor leader Kim Tae-nyeon will serve as the chairman of the Economic Crisis Response Special Committee. Chairman Woo will personally lead the Political Retaliation Investigation Response Organization.
Regarding this, Chairman Woo said, "Our Democratic Party will strive to become a competent and humble party for the people's livelihood, operating like a two-wheeled cart: one wheel representing economic and livelihood issues, and the other representing a strong opposition party's fight against oppression and retaliation. We will work to become a party that moves forward on these two wheels."
