[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Pukyong National University has established the first VR (Virtual Reality) education system in Korea to train fine dust experts.
The Pukyong National University Fine Dust Management Specialized Graduate School Project Group recently set up a VR experience lecture room on the second floor of Chungmugwan and began operating a VR education system equipped with dedicated devices and educational programs.
The system allows users to virtually experience the internal structure, operating principles, and equipment operation methods of the advanced fine dust observation device using lasers called the ‘Scanning LiDAR System’ through virtual reality.
When trainees wear VR equipment on their head and hands, they can virtually experience the ‘Scanning LiDAR System’ through 3D images and videos.
The ‘Scanning LiDAR System’ can display fine dust concentration distribution within a 5 km radius area at a high resolution of 30 m units, but it is expensive equipment equipped with sensitive optical sensors, making it difficult to directly check its internal structure and operating principles.
The project group built the VR education system as an educational innovation program this year and plans to expand VR lecture programs and VR lecture rooms next year.
Project Group Leader Professor Noh Young-min said, “We will nurture fine dust experts with a high understanding of observation equipment actually used in the field by utilizing the VR system, and strive to advance fine dust-related research through customized education that responds to the ever-evolving advanced equipment.”
The Pukyong National University Fine Dust Management Specialized Graduate School Project Group has been operating a fine dust expert training track since last year after being selected as the host university for the Southeast region in the Ministry of Environment and Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute’s environmental technology workforce training project.
