SKT Opens VFX Studio in Pangyo... "Leading the Paradigm of Media Content Production"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] SK Telecom announced on the 21st that it is launching ‘Team Studio,’ a media content production studio based on VFX (visual special effects), to strengthen content production capabilities and expand media cooperation domestically and internationally.

Maximizing Content Realism Using LED Wall Stage

The studio name ‘TEAM’ is an acronym for 'Tech-driven Entertainment for Asian Movement.' It signifies a global content studio created together by Asia and, beyond that, the entire world as one.

Located in Pangyo Second Techno Valley, Team Studio spans 3,050㎡ (approximately 930 pyeong) and features two ‘LED wall stages’ with LED screens installed on the floor: a U-shaped ‘Volume Stage’ (21m length × 5m height) and an ‘XR Stage’ (5m length × 5m height). To produce the LED walls, SK Telecom collaborated with global companies such as Auto for the ‘LED screens’ and Brompton for the ‘image processors.’

The two LED wall stages at Team Studio allow real-time rendering of graphics at a level comparable to actual locations without the need for on-site shooting. In particular, the large LED wall-equipped ‘Volume Stage’ is used for entertainment content production such as dramas, commercials, and music videos, enabling immersive backgrounds and grand-scale direction. The ‘XR Stage’ is effective for indoor-background content production, such as live commerce, according to SKT.

Until now, content production requiring special effects typically involved filming actors against green or blue chroma key backgrounds first, then adding the necessary background graphics later?a process that generally required significant time and cost in post-production. However, by utilizing LED walls, realistic backgrounds and environments can be instantly created during filming, enhancing actors’ immersion and reducing time and costs in post-production.

SKT explained that the background graphics rendered by Team Studio’s LED walls do not remain static; they naturally change perspective and distance according to camera movements during filming. Additionally, the direction and flow of light can be adjusted, providing maximized realism.

‘Hyperconnectivity’ of Domestic and International Studios Based on Telecom Infrastructure

SKT plans to leverage wired and wireless network infrastructure to facilitate cooperation between Team Studio and various domestic and international studios, aiming to build a global content ecosystem. SKT believes that ‘hyperconnectivity,’ which enables easy sharing and collaboration of capabilities among multiple content production studios using ICT infrastructure such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud, will become the core of the future global media market.

SKT intends to make leading hyperconnectivity with various studios a core value of Team Studio and actively pursue strategies based on this. First, it will form a consortium with major domestic LED wall specialized studios and share each studio’s infrastructure and resources to present a new content production paradigm without spatial and temporal constraints.

Kim Hyuk, head of SKT’s Global Media Support, stated, “Team Studio will contribute to the development of the media content industry by integrating SKT’s core technologies such as wired and wireless networks, AI, and cloud.” He added, “Based on this, we will strengthen cooperation with domestic and international media studios and inter-industry connections to lead the global media content production paradigm.”
