Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Gyeom-su) awarded certificates to students who wrote outstanding observation journals during the ‘Butterfly Life Cycle Ecological Experience Learning’ on the 15th.
‘Butterfly Life Cycle Ecological Experience Learning’ is an educational program where students raise butterflies themselves while observing and experiencing. This year marks the 12th year since its introduction.
The experience learning was introduced to provide students with an opportunity to go beyond simply learning ‘The Life Cycle of the Cabbage White Butterfly,’ a science curriculum for elementary students, through textbooks, by raising butterflies themselves to help their understanding and to discover the mystery and preciousness of nature and life on their own.
The certificate awarding ceremony was held to commend students who participated diligently in the butterfly life cycle experience learning from local elementary schools, kindergartens, daycare centers, and special schools in May, and who wrote excellent observation journals with outstanding observation and expression skills.
On that day, the district held the ceremony at the 4th floor Planning Situation Room of Gangbuk-gu Office, awarding certificates to a total of 13 students recommended by school principals for writing excellent observation journals.
Gangbuk-gu purchased butterfly life cycle experience kits consisting of butterfly eggs and kale pollen, the food for caterpillars, from Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do, famous for its butterfly festival, and supported educational institutions. This year, a total of 128 sets were provided to 14 elementary schools (68 classes), 3 special schools, 16 kindergartens, and 19 daycare centers.
An official from the district said, “Students have developed the habit of expressing their thoughts through writing observation journals for the butterfly life cycle experience learning,” adding, “We will do our best to further cultivate such observation and expression skills so that children can grow into excellent talents.”
