[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] A man in his 40s who caused a traffic accident while driving under the influence and fled was caught because of the smell of cigarettes while hiding in a warehouse in a residential area.

According to Ulsan Ulju Police Station on the 14th, at around 1:50 p.m. on the 12th, a passenger car crossed the center line and collided with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on a road near Namchang 2 Bridge in Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun.

Police investigation revealed that the man was already wanted for violating the Road Traffic Act and other offenses. After buying and drinking alcohol at a convenience store near the accident site, he drove the car in a state of severe intoxication with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.2%, causing the accident. Immediately after the accident, he abandoned the car and fled, hiding in a warehouse-type temporary building of a detached house.

However, based on a resident's report that "a man ran into the residential area," the police searched the surrounding residential area. They found the smell of cigarettes coming from an empty warehouse suspicious and checked inside, catching the man hiding in a corner of the warehouse. Four cigarette butts discarded by the man while smoking inside the warehouse were found on the floor.

The police are investigating the detailed circumstances of the drunk driving accident.
