Mobile Tuberculosis Screening for the Elderly... Including Free Treatment Services Provided
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do conducted tuberculosis screenings to focus on managing elderly people with a high incidence of tuberculosis.
The screening was carried out on the 10th in Jeungdo-myeon for seniors aged 65 and over by visiting welfare centers, in cooperation with the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korean Tuberculosis Association.
In Jeungdo-myeon, 67 people were screened, and 7 suspected cases were found, with secondary screenings currently underway. In the elderly tuberculosis screening conducted on April 25 in Amtae-myeon, 117 people were screened, and no tuberculosis patients were found.
Suspected tuberculosis patients detected through the screening undergo secondary tests, and if tuberculosis bacteria are found, free treatment services are provided through public health centers and specialized medical institutions.
Tuberculosis is a disease that can be completely cured if detected and treated early, but it tends to manifest in the elderly with a high latent tuberculosis rate when their immunity declines, resulting in a relatively higher mortality rate compared to other age groups, requiring thorough management.
A public health center official stated, “Tuberculosis diagnosis should rely less on symptoms and more on management through regular annual screenings.”
