[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) is holding a special memorial exhibition titled “The National Leader Who Led the March 1st Movement, Uiam Son Byeong-hui” at the Modern History Memorial Hall’s planned exhibition room until September 30th, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of Uiam Son Byeong-hui.

This special exhibition was prepared to honor the achievements and spirit of the independence movement of the national leader Uiam on the 100th anniversary of his martyrdom. Uiam Son Byeong-hui was born in 1861 in Cheongwon, Chungbuk, led the Donghak Peasant Revolution as the commander of the Hoseo Donghak Army, and led the independence movement as the spiritual pillar of the March 1st Movement.

He also succeeded Donghak and laid the foundation for Cheondogyo, running schools such as Boseong School and Dongduk Girls’ School, striving for national enlightenment, and took the lead in awakening the national spirit through media, publishing, and education.

The exhibition features many precious materials including Donghak and Cheondogyo scriptures owned by the Cheondogyo Central Headquarters, proclamations and notices of the Donghak Peasant Army, a cauldron and earthenware jars used by Son Byeong-hui during seven 49-day training retreats held at Bonghwanggak in preparation for the independence movement, verdicts of the 48 national representatives of the March 1st Movement, Son Byeong-hui’s business cards and seals, and family photographs.

Additionally, interesting materials such as various declarations and photos from the March 1st Movement held by the Institute for Korean Historical Issues, the Independence Hall, Korea University Museum, and Dongduk Women’s University Museum, as well as photos and documents related to Boseong Professional School and Dongduk Girls’ School, are also exhibited.

A district official stated, “This exhibition highlighting the life of Uiam Son Byeong-hui, a national leader who led the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the March 1st Movement, will be a valuable opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of the teacher who led an era as a thinker and revolutionary beyond being a religious figure.”

Gangbuk-gu Mayor Park Kyum-soo said, “I hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the blood and sweat of our ancestors who worked hard for independence,” and added, “We ask many citizens who are interested to visit.”
