[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Gun-chan] A man in his 50s who harbored resentment after receiving a fine for causing a disturbance to pedestrians while intoxicated in Busan was caught by the police for attempting to set fire to a police substation.
Busan Yeongdo Police Station announced on the 12th that they have apprehended and are investigating Mr. A on charges including attempted arson of an occupied building.
Mr. A is suspected of attempting to set fire to the Daegyo Police Substation in Yeongdo-gu around 7:40 a.m. on the 12th, carrying a PET bottle filled with gasoline and a lighter.
At the time, Mr. A tried to enter the substation and lock the entrance door, but the on-duty police officers stopped him and arrested him in the act.
Earlier, about an hour before the incident, at around 6:30 a.m. that day, Mr. A caused a disturbance to pedestrians on the street in Daegyo-dong, Yeongdo-gu. The police, who responded to the report, issued a fine of 50,000 won to Mr. A for violating the Minor Offenses Act.
Mr. A visited the Daegyo Police Substation around 7 a.m. to protest the fine and left, but returned about 10 minutes later to set fire to the substation.
At the time, seven police officers were on duty at the substation, but fortunately, there was no significant damage.
The police believe that Mr. A visited the substation with the intent to commit arson due to resentment over the fine.
The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant after investigating the exact motive behind Mr. A's crime.
