'Targeting Only Vehicles Changing Lanes'... 30s Couple Caught Making Large Sums from Intentional Traffic Accidents Suspect's vehicle used in the crime [Namyangju Nambu Police Station]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] A couple in their 30s who deliberately caused traffic accidents by targeting vehicles changing lanes and collected large insurance payouts have been caught by the police.

The Namyangju Southern Police Station announced on the 10th that "A (34) and B (30, female) were arrested on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, and the main suspect A was detained on the 7th."

The suspects are accused of intentionally causing 41 traffic accidents on roads in areas including Guri City, Gyeonggi Province, from October 2018 to March of this year, and receiving approximately 220 million won from nine insurance companies under the pretense of vehicle repair costs or settlement fees from the other party's insurance companies.

According to the police investigation, the couple, who are in a relationship, purchased and drove used foreign cars, and committed the crimes by targeting vehicles that changed lanes in no-lane-change zones or vehicles merging onto the road.

As similar types of accidents continued, insurance companies suspected insurance fraud and filed complaints with the police, who arrested the suspects after about five months of investigation.

The suspects admitted to some of the crimes, and it was reported that most of the insurance money was squandered on living expenses.

The police plan to send the case to the prosecution after completing the investigation into the use of the criminal proceeds and any additional offenses.

A police official stated, "Vehicles that change lanes in no-lane-change zones or forcefully cut in are likely to be assigned a high degree of fault in traffic accidents, making such vehicles prime targets for insurance fraud crimes," and urged "drivers to comply with traffic regulations when changing lanes."
