[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Dongkuk Steel announced on the 10th that it has donated 11.25 million KRW to the Environmental Foundation for the restoration of areas affected by the wildfires in Gangwon and Uljin.

At the '2022 Green Campaign Donation Ceremony' held yesterday at the Environmental Foundation headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, Kim Jihoon, Head of Management Support at Dongkuk Steel, Jung Taeyong, Secretary General of the Environmental Foundation, and other officials attended.

This year, Dongkuk Steel set the Green Campaign concept as 'Recycling Used Mobile Phones.' The campaign was planned with the intention of donating the proceeds from recycling used mobile phones to natural disaster recovery efforts. This is similar to Dongkuk Steel’s business model of recycling scrap metal to produce new steel products.

To carry out this campaign, Dongkuk Steel collaborated with Mintit. Mintit is an information and communication technology recycling specialist company equipped with complete personal data deletion and an AI-based price evaluation system. From the 2nd of last month, Dongkuk Steel collected used mobile phones over ten days from its headquarters, regional business sites, and affiliates. A total of 1,224 phones were collected and sent to Mintit for data deletion and appraisal. Combining the appraisal amount of 3.75 million KRW with Dongkuk Steel’s matching grant donation of 7.5 million KRW, a total of 11.25 million KRW was raised. The Environmental Foundation plans to use the donation for forest restoration work in the wildfire-affected areas of Gangwon and Uljin.

Since 2017, Dongkuk Steel has been conducting the Green Campaign to promote the eco-friendliness of steel. Last year, it held an online game-style Green Campaign and donated about 1,500 trees. Dongkuk Steel plans to continue its eco-friendly management through ongoing Green Campaigns in the future.
