Reenactment of 'Dumopo Expedition' Leading the Conquest of Daemado... Seongdong-gu Hosts '2022 Dumopo Festival' The '2019 Dumopo Festival' held to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Dumopo's departure (2019),
a performance presented in the form of a music drama

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will hold the ‘2022 Dumopo Festival’ on the 18th at Oksoo Station Hangang Park, providing a time for harmony and healing with residents and opening a communication space to prepare for a new daily life.

Held under the theme ‘Set Out Toward Harmony and Healing,’ this festival is set against the backdrop of ‘Dumopo’ in the Oksu-dong area, where military expeditions were held during the Joseon Dynasty.

Using the historical fact of the ‘Dumopo Expedition,’ which led the conquest of Tsushima Island in the first year of King Sejong’s reign, various performances and shows are prepared, along with a flea market selling various crafts, and traditional games and experiences such as archery and cannon shooting.

The ‘Chwita Band Expedition Parade’ will grandly reenact the expedition ceremony from over 600 years ago, and the samulnori percussion performance and jaedamkkun’s aniri (a storytelling style in pansori without melody, told like a narrative) will cleverly and spiritedly convey the story of that historic day.

A ‘music drama’ composed of different musical styles such as opera singing, Korean classical songs, and opera will also be presented, based on the historical fact of the ‘Dumopo Expedition.’

With a total of 39 cast members including actors, dancers, and an orchestra, solid actors such as Nam Myeong-ryeol as King Taejong and Son Hye-su as King Sejong will participate. The performance will depict the firm determination of King Taejong for the conquest of Tsushima Island, the expedition ceremony, and moments of conflict and harmony during the war. Dramatic elements such as family love will be added to make the historical story more accessible to citizens.

From the 10th of this month, eight generals’ balloon art will be exhibited, providing photo zones and various attractions, and a rich festival will be created with various experiences such as jegichagi (Korean shuttlecock kicking), ttakji chigi (playing with folded paper tiles), and cannon shooting.

On May 18, 1419, King Taejong, accompanied by King Sejong, personally poured drinks for eight commanders including Yi Jong-mu at Hangang Dumopo (豆毛浦), held an expedition ceremony distributing bows and arrows to about 700 soldiers, then landed on Tsushima Island, fought battles, defeated the Japanese, and forced the surrender of the Tsushima lord, successfully conquering Tsushima Island.

In 2019, marking the 600th anniversary of the ‘Dumopo Expedition,’ the district held the first festival. Since the historic event of overcoming hardships with high spirits and strong shouts took place at the old Joseon-era ferry port ‘Dumopo’ located in the current Oksoo Station Hangang area, the district plans to continue enjoying the tradition and culture of this historically rich place with residents through various cultural performances.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Just as the firm beliefs of King Taejong and King Sejong led to a victorious history, I hope our residents, overcoming COVID-19 and restoring daily life, will gain opportunities for healing and recovery through this festival.”
