Uiwang-si Excels in Managing Greenbelt Areas

[Asia Economy (Uiwang) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province evaluated the management status of the Greenbelt areas managed by 21 cities and counties within the province and selected and announced 12 excellent cities and counties, including Uiwang-si.

Based on last year, the province evaluated two areas: prevention of illegal activities in the Greenbelt areas by cities and counties (enforcement plans, excellent policies, utilization of management personnel, etc.) and post-management (statistical management, administrative measures, restoration, etc.), selecting Uiwang-si as the target local government.

Following this, the awards were given to 12 local governments: Grand Prize to Guri and Suwon-si; Excellence Award to Ansan, Gwangju, Hwaseong, and Seongnam-si; Encouragement Award to Goyang, Bucheon, Hanam, Gwangmyeong, and Anyang-si.

Uiwang-si, selected as the best city/county, actively conducted special holiday crackdowns to prevent illegal activities in clean valleys during the summer peak season within the Greenbelt, and illegal filling of farmland. They also carried out joint crackdowns with wildfire monitors to prevent forest fires and forest damage such as logging in forest areas, and actively proposed and recommended amendments to related laws.

Additionally, they promoted the prohibition of illegal activities through banners and signboards, and received the highest score for thorough post-management including detection and measures against illegal activities within the Greenbelt.

According to this evaluation, Uiwang-si, the target institution, will receive 20 million KRW, the best institutions will each receive 10 million KRW, excellent institutions 7.5 million KRW each, and encouragement institutions 6 million KRW each as project funds and certificates.

A provincial official stated, "We hope that through healthy competition among cities and counties and the dissemination of excellent cases, cities and counties can efficiently manage the Greenbelt areas." He added, "Excellent cases will be shared with the 21 cities and counties within the province that have Greenbelt areas."
